Attendance Policy

Summer Attendance Policy

General Expectation:

Attendance is mandatory for all scheduled classes. Each student is expected to attend both the morning and afternoon sessions every day.

Unexcused Absences:

  1. An absence without prior notification and approval or valid documentation will be considered unexcused.
  2. Consequences for unexcused absences.
    1. 1st Unexcused Absence: Written warning to the student and a notification to parents/guardians.
    2. 2nd Unexcused Absence: Meeting with the program coordinator and parents/guardians to discuss the student’s commitment to the program.
    3. 3rd Unexcused Absence: Will result in an administrative withdrawal from the program. Please note, a withdrawal could lead to a negative grade on the student transcript.

Excused Absences:

  1. Excused absences are permitted for the following reasons:
    1. Illness (must be accompanied by a doctor’s note if absent for more than one day)
    2. Family emergency (e.g., bereavement, critical illness of a family member)
    3. Pre-approved educational activities (e.g., academic competitions, college visits)
    4. Religious observances
  2. Students or their parents/guardians must inform the program coordinator as soon as possible if they need to request an excused absence.
  3. Proper documentation must be provided to support the reason for the absence.
  4. Each 2 excused absences will be considered equivalent to 1 unexcused absence.

Fall/Spring Attendance Policy

This absence policy is designed to promote regular attendance and punctuality among students while allowing for reasonable exceptions in cases of genuine emergencies or illnesses.

Policy Details:

  1. Unexcused Absences: Each student is allowed a maximum of 3 unexcused absences per academic term. These absences will not require documentation or prior notification. Students who exceed this limit will be withdrawn from the program.
  2. Excused Absences: Students may have up to 2 excused absences without penalty. An excused absence is one where the student provides appropriate documentation, such as a doctor’s note or a note from a parent or guardian explaining the reason for the absence. Every 3rd excused absence will be counted as one unexcused absence.
  3. Lateness: Students are expected to arrive on time for all classes. Three instances of lateness will be counted as one unexcused absence. Lateness is defined as arriving after the class has officially started.

Consequences for Exceeding Allowable Absences:

  • Unexcused Absences: Exceeding 3 unexcused absences will result in withdrawal from the program.
  • Excused Absences: Accumulating more than 2 excused absences, with the third counting as one unexcused absence, could result in withdrawal from the program in combination with unexcused absences or lateness.
  • Lateness: Accumulating 3 instances of lateness, which count as one unexcused absence, could result in withdrawal from the program in combination with unexcused absences or lateness.

Grading and Elective Credit:

Students in Grades 8-12 who are withdrawn due to excessive absences may receive an F grade for the course(s) affected and will not receive elective credit for those courses.

This policy strongly encourages students to attend classes regularly, be punctual, and maintain academic progress, while also establishing clear consequences for those who exceed allowable absences.
